Top 10 Harry Potter Books and Other Gifts for the Ultimate Fan

HP Books, Audio Books, Movies and More

By

What do you buy for an individual or family that loves the Harry Potter books?  I've found a new Harry Potter cookbook, a deluxe edition of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows,  a Blu-ray set of the Harry Potter Year 1-6 movies, gift set collections of the Harry Potter series in hardbound, paperback and audio book editions, a knitting book with patterns related to the Harry Potter books, and the Harry Potter version of a popular board game.  There's also a collection of tales by J.K. Rowling that shed light on the Harry Potter series and a gift set of Harry Potter schoolbooks. Take a look at my recommendations.

1. The Unofficial Harry Potter Cookbook

Even the dedicated Harry Potter fan may not own this cookbook yet, because it was just published in the fall of 2010.  The subtitle of The Unofficial Harry Potter Cookbook is From Cauldron Cakes to Knickerbocker Glory-More Than 150 Magical Recipes for Wizards and Non-Wizards Alike. The book is divided into 10 chapters with entertaining titles, such as Good Food with Bad Relatives.  The cookbook's author relates each recipe to the appropriate chapter in one of the Harry Potter books and provides a bit of historical information as well. This Harry Potter cookbook is nicely designed and provides appealing recipes and a nice introducton to a number of the foods of the British Isles.  Read my review of The Unofficial Harry Potter Cookbook.

2. Harry Potter Schoolbooks: Boxed Gift Set

Quidditch Through the Ages and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them by J.K. Rowling are brief and entertaining books. They are presented as two of Harry's textbooks from Hogwarts School that were written by specialists in the fields of beasts and Quidditch. The books are amazingly detailed, and readers of all ages will gain a new appreciation for the Harry Potter series after reading them. This is a boxed gift set, making it a particularly nice gift for a Harry Potter fan.  Read my review of Quidditch Through the Ages and my review of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

3. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Deluxe Edition

Like previous deluxe editions, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is beautifully designed, with a special insert of artwork by the series illustrator, Mary GrandPré. The book is cloth-bound, with an attractive slipcase. The deluxe edition of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is a "must have" item for the dedicated fan. For more information about the deluxe edition, see my FAQ about it. (Scholastic, 2007. ISBN: 9780545029377)

4. The Tales of Beedle the Bard

Scholastic, Inc.

There is an interesting connection between The Tales of Beedle the Bard by J.K. Rowling and her Harry Potter series. The Tales of Beedle the Bard is the collection of wizarding fairy tales Albus Dumbledore leaves to Hermione Granger in the seventh book of the Harry Potter series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. There are clues in the tales critical to Harry Potter’s final mission. This is a excellent gift for the reader who likes to study all of the details and connections in the Harry Potter series. 5. The Sorcerer's Companion: A Guide to the Magical World of Harry Potter

The Sorcerer's Companion: A Guide to the Magical World of Harry Potter is a basic reference book for Harry Potter fans ages 9-14. The Sorcerer's Companion provides a brief look at a long list of topics related to the Harry Potter series.  The topics covered include: Magic, Sorcerer, Wizard, Invisibility Cloak, Dragons and many others. The book's illustrations, many historical, add to its appeal.  (Broadway Books, An Imprint of Crown Publishing Group, A Division of Random House, Inc., 2001, 2004, 2010. 6. Clue Harry Potter Board Game

For family fun for ages 10 and older, enjoy the Harry Potter version of the classic mystery board game Clue.  According to the manufacturer, "Dark magic has been performed at Hogwarts! A fellow student has vanished from the famous School of Witchcraft and Wizardry—and it is up to you to solve the mysterious disappearance."  It's not only the plot of Clue Harry Potter that centers on the Harry Potter series. While there are many aspects of the basic game that are like the classic game of Clue, still others, like House Points, add a special Harry Potter twist to the game.

7. Harry Potter Complete Series Audio Collection

The narrator of each of the individually boxed audio books, Jim Dale, has won awards for his narration of the Harry Potter series.  Because of the price, I would recommend the full collection as a gift for someone who is not able to read the books or will be spending hours (or days) on a plane, car, or bus. Each audio book is also available for purchase and an audio book of a favorite Harry Potter book would be a splendid gift for any fan.  Audio book versions:  Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

8. Harry Potter Paperback Box Set: The Complete Harry Potter Series

The boxed set of the complete Harry Potter series in paperback is an attractive gift.  The cardboard case is covered with illustrations as are the covers of each of the seven paperback books in the series.  The books are particularly appropriate for the reader who likes to carry around reading materails in a backpack and would prefer the lighter weight of paperback books. This is yet another Harry Potter gift that will be prized by dedicated Harry Potter fans of all ages.

9. Harry Potter: Years 1-6 (Blu-ray Disc)

Enjoy movie versions of the first six books in J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series on Blu-ray discs. Each movie also comes with additional scenes, interviews and /or other extras. All include English subtitles, four include English and Spanish subtitles and all but the first movie includes English and French subtitles. A Blu-ray version of a fan's favorite Harry Potter movie is also a great gift, and Blu-ray versions of individual Harry Potter movies are available: Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, and Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.

10. Harry Potter Hardcover Box Set Books 1-7

This hardcover collection of all seven of the books in the Harry Potter series comes in a colorful cardboard box that looks like it might be Harry's trunk. It has handles and is printed with what looks like metal trim so it looks like a genuine trunk. It is labeled "Harry Potter" in decorative type below the trunk's lock (plastic) and has a "Deliver to" tag printed on the top.  This is a wonderful gift for the dedicated Harry Potter fan, whether a child, teen or adult. However, the trunk is just cardboard and while very attractive, it will not stand up to being used as a plaything or moved around a lot. The value here is in the hardcover editions of the books and decorative value of the trunk.
