Author: Robie H. Harris
Illustrator: Nadine Bernard Westcott
Length: 34 pages
Recommended For: Ages 2-6
Contents: As the subtitle states, Who Has What? is All About Girls' Bodies and Boys' Bodies. This informational book differs from Harris's three earlier nonfiction books about sex and sexual health in a number of ways. Unlike the others, the illustrator is not Michael Emberley, but Nadine Bernard Westcott. The book has a picture book format and features two children, Nellie and Gus, their dog and their parents, and a day at the beach.
While the illustrations feature the family's activities on the way to and at the beach, the text, which targets children ages 2-6, covers the parts of the body, with an emphasis on what's the same and what's different in boys and girls. The body parts of dogs are also emphasized. To learn why, see my Robie H. Harris Interview About Who Has What?, which is part of my 3-Part Robie H. Harris Interview.
One of the things I particularly like about the illustrations by Nadine Bernard Westcott is the amount of detail and activity she includes in every double-page spread. All of the dialogue between the children appears in voice bubbles such as you see in comic strips and all of the body parts labels are similar in style. There is only about a paragraph of regular text on each page, but the combination of the labels, the children's words, the illustrations and the text enables Harris and Westcott to share a great deal of information in a way that is appropriate for children ages 2-6.
