Pippi Longstocking: The Illustrator, Lauren Child
British author and illustrator Lauren Child was awarded the prestigious Kate Greenaway Medal in 2001 for her picture book I Will Not Ever Never Eat A Tomato, which features big brother and little sister, Charlie and Lola, who are also featured in I Am Too Absolutely Small for School. One of Lauren Child's most popular characters, featured in both picture books and beginning chapter books, is Clarice Bean. That's Me, Clarice Bean was honored as a 2000 IRA (International Reading Association) Children's Choice book.Pippi Longstocking: My Recommendation
I recommend this edition of Pippi Longstocking for 8-12 year olds and for younger children as a read aloud. If you want every illustration to exactly match the authors descriptions, you may be disappointed in some of the artistic license Lauren Child takes. However, I think her offbeat illustrations complement the character of Pippi Longstocking, who is definitely not the type of child who colors within the lines. Since 9-year-old Pippi is stronger than anyone, self-sufficient, and answers to no one, you can imagine how attractive this is to young readers. The book is nicely designed, with sturdy and smooth pages, numerous colorful illustrations, and a two-page afterword, with information about the author, illustrator, and translator. The translation, by Tiina Nunnally, who has won numerous awards for her translations of Scandinavian languages, is very well done, with none of the awkward phrases and word choices that can be found in poor translations.2007 Edition of Pippi Longstocking: Publication Information
