You won't find any poetry about Christmas, Hanukkah, or any other winter holiday in
Winter Poems, an excellent collection of poetry compiled by Barbara Rogasky. Instead, in
Winter Poems you'll find poetry that focuses on nature and daily activities in the winter. Children of all ages and adults will enjoy this poetry book.
Winter Poems provides a wonderful introduction to the poetry of Robert Frost, Emily Dickinson, and William Wordsworth, among others - 25 poets in all. The poetry, the book's design, and the lovely illustrations in acrylics by Trina Schart Hyman make this book a "must-have." Trina Schart Hyman won numerous awards for her children's book illustrations, characterized by both delicacy and detail.
I am sorry that the book is no longer available in a hardbound edition (except for an occasional used copy), but we are enjoying our paperback edition. It's interesting to note that Trina Schart Hyman used her own home, neighborhood, family, friends, and animals as the basis for the book's illustrations. I highly recommend Winter Poems.
