D'Aulaires' Book of Greek Myths

D'Aulaires' Book of Greek Myths is a classic. First published in 1962, D'Aulaires' Book of Greek Myths provides a fascinating introduction to the world of Greek myths and mythology. This children's book, which was written and illustrated by Ingri and Edgar Parin d'Aulaire, has been popular in classrooms and homes for almost 50 years.

D'Aulaires' Book of Greek Myths: The Book's Design and Contents

D'Aulaires' Book of Greek Myths is 192-pages long and is profusely illustrated with drawings in both vibrant color and in black on brown. The artwork by Ingri and Edgar Parin d'Aulaire, while at first glance looking like simple color pencil sketches, is full of intriguing details and imagery. D'Aulaires' Book of Greek Myths is filled with captivating Greek myths told and illustrated in a way that captures the reader's interest.

D'Aulaires' Book of Greek Myths starts with an introduction and two Greek myths: Gaea, Mother Earth and The Titans. The remaining contents are divided into three major sections: Zeus and his Family; Minor Gods, Nymphs, Satyrs and Centaurs; and Mortal Descendants of Zeus. The topics include: Aphrodite, Poseidon, Apollo, Persephone and Demeter, Dionysus, The Nine Muses, Clever and Vainglorious Kings, King Midas, Oedipus and The Golden Fleece, among many others. There is also a helpful three page annotated index.

Ingri and Edgar Parin d'Aulaire

Artists and writers Ingri and Edgar Parin d'Aulaire had more than two dozen children's books published between 1931 and 1976. They were honored with the 1940 Caldecott Medal for children's book illustration for Abraham Lincoln. Some of their other children's books that are in print include: D'Aulaires' Book of Norse Myths, George Washington, D'Aulaires' Book of Trolls, The Two Cars, Foxie, The Singing Dog and The Terrible Troll-Bird.

D'Aulaires' Book of Greek Myths: My Recommendation

I particularly recommend D'Aulaires' Book of Greek Myths for ages 9-12 (grades 4-6). However, the book has also proven to be a popular read-aloud for younger children and popular with young teens as well, so don't hesitate to share it more widely. In addition, it's a good book to share with all the kids who've become interested in Greek mythology after reading Rick Riordan's Percy Jackson and the Olympians series.
