Backyard Science

About.com Rating four out of Five

By Elizabeth Kennedy, About.com

Backyard Science is a big colorful nonfiction children's book filled with science projects your kids can do in their own backyard. Profusely illustrated with humorous artwork and photographs, the 80-page book contains more than two dozen science projects for kids, a glossary, and an index.

Backyard Science: The Science Projects

The projects generally cover two facing pages. They all include artwork, photography, and instructions. After a brief description of the project, there's a materials list (What You Need), step-by-step instructions that include color photographs of children working on the project (What You Do), and a results section (What Happened). Many of the projects in Backyard Science also include additional information on the project topic (Did You Know?).

The consistent formatting throughout Backyard Science makes it easy for young scientists to follow. The 29 projects are ones that will appeal to kids. The activities are designed to determine such things as:

  • What do ants like to eat?
  • Do bird feathers differ?
  • How can I attract hummingbirds?
  • What animals visit the backyard at night?
  • How does tree bark differ?

Backyard Science: The Authors and Illustrators

The authors of Backyard Science are Shar Levine and Leslie Johnstone. Levine is the award-winning author of a number of science books for children. Johnstone heads a high school science department in Vancouver. The two have collaborated on numerous children's science books. The colorful humorous illustrations are by artist Dave Garbot while Stephen Ogilvy did the project photography.

Backyard Science: My Recommendation

One of the nice things about Backyard Science is that it will appeal to a wide range of ages. Six- to twelve-year-olds will enjoy the science projects, with parents assisting younger children and older children able to do the projects on their own. Happily, the photographs of children doing the projects also show children of various ages working together, which should help to motivate siblings to do these projects together. I found this book at my local public library. (Sterling Publishing Co., Inc., 2005. ISBN: 1402715196)
