By Elizabeth Kennedy, About.com

Charmed Knits: Projects for Fans of Harry Potter is full of knitting patterns and instructions for unique projects that fans of the Harry Potter series will enjoy making or receiving. With color photographs of each project, a list of materials, the gauge, clear instructions, and an appendix that includes an illustrated section on knitting techniques, readers will find the book easy, and fun, to follow.

Charmed Knits: Projects for Fans of Harry Potter: Difficulty Levels

The projects are also rated for difficulty level: First year patterns are for beginning knitters who already know how to knit and purl. Ordinary Wizarding Level (O.W.L.) patterns are for intermediate knitters. Nastily Exhausting Wizarding Test (N.E.W.T.) patterns are for skilled knitters.

Charmed Knits: Projects for Fans of Harry Potter: Patterns

Each chapter has a different focus. The Weasley Knits chapter includes knitting instructions for the Weasley Sweater, Errol (the Weasleys's owl), and Molly's Amazing Technicolor Housecoat. The Diagon Alley chapter includes knitting instructions for a Student Wizard Cap, a Wizard Robe, and an Invisibility Shawl, as well as a Quidditch Sweater and Socks. The House Colors chapter provides knitting instructions for a variety of house-related knitting projects, including scarves, hats, mittens, socks, and a house sweater. In The Magic of Giving chapter, author Alison Hansel includes patterns for Dobby's socks, Elf Hats, Hermione's Magic Knitting Bag, and several Christmas ornaments. The Home at Hogwarts chapter features several cable knits, including Harry's Red Cable Sweater and Hermione's Cable and Bobble Hat and Mittens. It also includes Ron's Animal Crackers Hat and Ragg Raglan.

Charmed Knits: My Recommendation

This book will be a big hit with Harry Potter fans of all ages. I would recommend it for those who have, at a minimum, a firm grasp of knitting basics. While there are quite a few patterns for beginning and intermediate knitters, some of the patterns really are "Nastily Exhausting" and should only be undertaken by an experienced, and patient, knitter.

It's important that young knitters have a realistic view of their own abilities and a willingness to stick to patterns below or at their own skill level so they don't get overwhelmed and frustrated. In addition to being a book young knitters will enjoy, Charmed Knits: Projects for Fans of Harry Potter is also a book that adults will enjoy using to make gifts for the Harry Potter fans in their families.
