Reading is for the boys (and girls)!

While Reading is for the boys (and girls)! is a "WebQuest for teachers [that] looks at the difficult issue of how to get — and keep — boys interested in reading," it contains a great deal of information that will also be of interest to parents. The WebQuest includes specific information about what research on the subject of boys and reading has revealed, the importance of text selection, what engages boys in reading, and pedagogy. There are links to research, reading lists, articles and Web sites, including Guys Read, the literacy initiative of author Jon Scieszka. There are also links to a number of lesson plans using strategies that have proven to be effective with boys. The WebQuest is part of LEARN NC, a program of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Education. According to its Web site, LEARN NC "finds the most innovative and successful practices in K–12 education and makes them available to the teachers and students of North Carolina — and the world."
