I Pledge Allegiance

Cover Art of Children's Beginning Reader I Pledge of AllegianceCarolrhoda Books
This beginning nonfiction reader provides the history of the Pledge of Allegiance, its adoption and changes in wording over the years. What makes the book particularly interesting is the inclusion of information about how schools and school children across the country first became involved in honoring the flag through collecting pennies to buy United States flags for their schools, and celebrating the new Columbus Day holiday by reciting thre new flag salute, the Pledge of Allegiance.

While the author emphasizes the meanings of the words of the Pledge of Allegiance, the main focus of the book is on a chronological history of the Pledge of Allegiance. I recommend I Pledge Allegiance for seven- to nine-year olds. June Swanson is the author and Rick Hanson is the illustrator of the book, which is part of the On My Own History Readers series.
