Movie Versions of Three Children’s Books Nominated for Oscars

Updated March 10, 2012
I was delighted to learn that the movie versions of three children’s books are up for a total of 10 Oscars this year. The movies are "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban," "Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events," and "The Polar Express." Lately, it seems there’s been quite an increase in movie versions of children’s books that have turned out to be both popular and well done. With “Because of Winn-Dixie” and several other movie versions of children’s books opening in 2005, I hope this trend continues. The nominations are (drumroll, please):

"Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban" (Warner Bros.)

  • Music (Original Score): John Williams
  • Visual Effects: Roger Guyett, Tim Burke, John Richardson and Bill George
"Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events" (Paramount and DreamWorks)
  • Music (Original Score): Thomas Newman
  • Makeup: Valli O’Reilly and Bill Corso
  • Art Direction: Rick Heinrichs
  • Set Decoration: Cheryl Carasik
  • Costume Design: Colleen Atwood
"The Polar Express" (Warner Bros.)
  • Music (Original Song): "Believe": Music and Lyric by Glen Ballard and Alan Silvestri
  • Sound Editing: Randy Thom and Dennis Leonard
  • Sound Mixing: Randy Thom, Tom Johnson, Dennis Sands and William B. Kaplan
