Mother Goose Books and Other Good Baby Shower Gifts
When I attended a baby shower, I was pleased to see several Mother Goose and other children's books given as presents. Mother Goose rhymes are very appealing to young children. They find the rhymes and alliteration engaging and humorous. Many of the rhymes are short and easy for young children to learn. Add to that the striking illustrations in many Mother Goose collections, and you can see why even a very young child would enjoy both words and pictures. My three favorite board books to give as baby shower gifts are Tomie's Little Mother Goose, by Tomie dePaola, Pat the Bunny, a classic interactive book for little ones by Edith Kunhardt Davies, and Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?, a terrific rhyming book by Bill Martin Jr., with illustrations by Eric Carle.(Cover art courtesy of Scholastic) Friday May 16, 2008 | permalink | comments (0) Today Is Birth Date of Author of The Wonderful Wizard of OzAuthor L. Frank Baum was born on May 15, 1856. His children's book The Wonderful Wizard of Oz was published in 1900. Since then, it has become a classic. According to L. Frank Baum, "...[The Wonderful Wizard of Oz ] aspires to being a modernized fairy tale, in which the wonderment and joy are retained and the heart-aches and nightmares are left out." The book is still full of hair raising adventures, but it is not as violent as the original Grimm's fairy tales. Have you and your children read The Wonderful Wizard of Oz or any of Baum's other Oz books? What did you think of them? Click on "comments" below and share your opinions.
