Reader Stories: How I Introduced Children's Books to My Baby / Toddler

From Lisa Noel

A Little About My Baby / Toddler and Myself

My toddler is my third son. He will be 3 the end of January.

What I Did:

With all of my kids, books, and lots of them, have been around since they were born. With great board books for them to look at to the classics like Dr Seuss that I'd read in whatever amounts they'd sit still through.

How I Did It:

I found that some of the best books were the board books about a specific topic, like colors, animals, etc. that we could look at again and again naming the things. Then, as they get the physical skills, adding lift-a-flap books is huge. And now at almost 3 years old, the best books are those that are predictable so he can finish sentences and "help read."

Lessons Learned

  • Have a wide variety of books available.
  • Start reading time very early.
  • Even if they will only sit for a couple sentences, don't turn down their requests to read.
  • You can read to them even if they won't sit still. They are still absorbing it.
  • You can always read books while they're in their high chair eating.
  • Books don't have to be expensive to be great.

Thanks for all of the great tips. I particularly agree with your last comment. I recommend using the library (see Save Money at Your Public Library) to share lots of different books with your child and to preview books before you buy them.
