Share Your Story: How and Why I Share Picture Books With My Children

From JBMomma

A Little About My Family and Myself

I am the mother of two girls, ages 6 and 4, with one on the way. I am a former first grade teacher, and my children are in a French Immersion kindergarten program through our public school.

A favorite picture book from my childhood

A favorite picture book when I was a child was in a series of books. The title was The Value of Believing in Yourself: The Story of Louis Pasteur. Great pictures and an inspiring tale.

What I Did:

We read daily, which is very important because our girls are in French Immersion, so we need to expose them to English while at home. We have a very full library in our playroom with bean bag chairs and books displayed so that the girls can easily access them and browse the titles.

We also have a section in our library that is devoted to books that focus on our faith. We try and balance out our secular titles and faith-based titles and read from each regularly.

How I Did It:

Our girls could read book after book after book.

Current favorites include:

  • Marvin K. Mooney by Dr. Seuss
  • The Pinkalicious series
  • Books that use photographs as the illustrations
We do our best to include the girls in the reading, allowing them to chime in and read words. Many books they have "memorized" and now read to us.

Lessons Learned

  • Children are sponges and love the attention when read to; make it special.
  • For high energy children, read to them while there in the bathtub! I find my audience is a bit "captured."
  • Don't worry about reading the same book 1,000 times; favorites are favorites for reasons.

Elizabeth Kennedy, Children's Books Guide, says:

I think it's great that you read to your children every day and that you have have children's books easily accessible in your playroom.
