So Many Great Books

I teach English to teens and recently we have read Pride and Prejudice, His Dark Materials, Anita and Me, A Little Princess and The Hobbit.

None

Well, actually, I am a teen but I've read the following: The Bartimaeous Trilogy, The Inheritance Cycle, And Then There Were None, Ranger's Apprentice, Maximum Ride, and Red Wall. I'm currently reading Thirteen at Dinner and Seventeenth Summer. I'm also reading Maximum Ride to my brothers (ages 8 & 10) and they love it. Also, you're never too old for A Series of Unfortunate Events. My whole family enjoys listening to them on audiobook in the car while traveling.

High School Athletes

The Room, a high school football memoir by John M Brewer (2011). Not a glory story, but a moving account of one talented young player's ultimately successful struggle against harsh team hazing and a coach who valued a winning record more than the lives of his players. Midwest Book Review calls it "a fascinating read, cover to cover." But this is not a "children's book." Be prepared for life as it sometimes really is during those crazy teen years.

A teenage perspective

Tamar by Mal Peet; a girl discovering more about her grandfather's life in the SOE. A Winter in Madrid by C.J Sansom, a story of a wounded veteran in 1940 fascist Spain. Lord of the Flies by William Golding, a seriously creepy view of teenage boys let loose. Dracula by Bram Stoker, still the definitive vampire book, and a great monster/adventure story. Flashman by George MacDonald Fraser, the typical anti-hero, escaping his own treachery, ending up covered in glory.

Eragon series by Paolini

My 14 year old son is reading the 3rd book of the Eragon series, Brisinger, after devouring the first two. He's also reading the series that begins with 8th Grade Bites by Heather Brewer.

Parent of Reluctant Reader

My 15 year old daughter isn't a big reader, but she read The Help this past summer and loved it. I've been urging her to read it since I read it last summer. She's now reading the first book in the Pretty Little Liars series and likes it.

Books My Teen Girls Like

I have twin teen girls. They are not particularly eager readers, so it can be difficult to engage them. Some things that they have read recently are: The Death and Life of Charlie St. Cloud by Ben Sherwood (this was done as a movie in 2010, but the book is so much better!). My daughter liked the book a lot. The Maximum Ride series by James Patterson A Northern Light by Jennifer Donnelly

Percy Jackson and Warrior

My teens are young teens, but they are currently devouring the Percy Jackson books and the Warrior series, which is about warrior cats!

My teenage girl liked these

Wicked by Maguire - She's been reading it on and off for a few months. She likes it, but it's slow going for her. Persepolis by Satrapi - It's a graphic novel about coming of age in Iran during the Islamic Revolution. She read it for her English class. Couldn't pull her away from it. Naked Came the Manatee by various authors - This is a collaboration of several Florida writers (Dave Barry, Elmore Leonard, Carl Hiaason). It's a serial-installment mystery. It's from 1995. I had it in the pile for Goodwill and she rescued it because the name appealed to her. But she likes it! I don't know if these are very typical teen books. But it just shows you can never tell what teens will like.

My kids read a lot.

My 17- and 13-year-old sons are reading: 39 Clues, Inheritance Cycle, Artemis Fowl, Circle of Magic, Hunger Games. Our teen girls loved: Page: Protector of the Small (Tamora Pierce); Maus (parental notification for Holocaust stuff here). Both groups liked the Red Wall Series by Brian Jacques.

Only two at the moment...

She is rereading Harry Potter 7 because the movie is coming next month and Along for the Ride by Sarah Dessen.

Jodi Picoult

My 16-year-old daughter is currently enjoying Jodi Picoult's novels. They touch on ethical issues, which are interesting to this age group, although some have mature themes and language, so parents need to monitor. My 14-year-old daughter is reading the Cherub books by Robert Muchamore, an action-packed spy novel series about teenage MI5 agents.
