What are some of the children’s picture books and beginning reader books that feature popular children’s book characters and emphasize protecting the environment that you recommend for children 8 and under? For each book, share the title, format (picture book or beginning reader book), what ages the book is appropriate for and why you like it. Thanks! Share your favorites

Where Do Recyclable Materials Go?

If your kids love The Magic School Bus books they will enjoy Sabbithry Persad's "Where Do Recyclable Materials Go?" While the book is at reading level 2, it has so many illustrations that it can be enjoyed as a picture book you read to your child. Tiana learns about recycling while she and her family search for their dog Bubbles who has chased after the recycle truck. On their adventure, they explore the MURF—the MRF (Materials Recovery Facility) where they see how recyclable materials are sorted and baled for manufacturing. Based on facts about the process of recycling in industrial countries, this book helps children understand the importance of recycling to save natural resources and much more. This is a book worth reading several times. I recommend "Where Do Recyclable Materials Go?" for ages 5-9. (EcoAdventures, An Imprint of Firewater Media Group, 2011. ISBN: 9780981243900)
